In 2019, twelve women were brought together to create twelve unique quilts. Ranging from Hawaii to the northernmost parts of Canada, rural and urban alike, every end of the political spectrum, we came together in more ways than just mailing two squares of fabric once a month. Some had never quilted before, others average multiple quilts a month. Two babies were born, parents were lost, houses moved, grandchildren were celebrated, pets were mourned, difficult conversations were had and husbands only occasionally mocked. This quilt of 49 stars is the first produced from our group. Each block is completely unique using the leftover scraps from our scrap bins, our own interpretations of stars, and it is the pride and joy of my quilts. If diversity is defined by numbers and inclusion is established from impact, I am happy to say that the age-old quilting bee that once brought local community members together survives in the digital world. Thank you to the incredible women who embraced this challenge with me.
